Maths
“Mathematics knows no races or geographic boundaries; for mathematics, the cultural world is one country.” – David Hilbert
Vision
Mathematics is a highly interconnected discipline that provides students with the life skills necessary to become functional, numerate members of society. Developing a growth mindset through deeper thinking and risk taking will allow the students to gain enjoyment and curiosity about mathematics. Students are equipped with the belief that with hard work they can achieve. All students are encouraged to have a ‘can do’ attitude and are regularly challenged to think independently and reason mathematically.
Curriculum Intent
At Deyes High School, students become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics. All students are encouraged to have a ‘can do’ attitude and are regularly challenged to think independently and reason mathematically. Students can transfer their knowledge in order to be creative and confident problem solvers. In our subject area, students are resilient and thrive when challenged. We have high ambitions for all students and ensure that the curriculum is adaptable to allow teachers to stretch and challenge all students.
By the end of each Key Stage, students will have experienced a culturally rich curriculum and will have mastered the declarative, procedural and conditional knowledge both to proceed to the next Key Stage.
A series of lessons will contain the following:
- Effective questioning that promotes oracy.
- Problem solving that promotes retrieval and brings together the essential knowledge of the National Curriculum.
- Tasks that promote deep thinking and resilience giving all pupils the opportunity to reason and explain.
Students join Deyes High School as strong mathematicians, and this is reflected in the ambition of this curriculum.
